THE ATLANTIC CHAMPIONSHIP

The 18-hole Atlantic course designed by Robert Trent Jones Jr., opened in 1992 and staged the Portuguese Open two years later. Every hole is different and exciting, with Jones using the contours to great effect. The course has a superb flow and the views throughout are magnificent, especially away to the coastal towns of Cascais and Estoril and to the blue Atlantic ocean.

ICONIC HOLES AT THE ATLANTIC CHAMPIONSHIP

There are few rewards for bravery here! Simply take a long iron or fairway wood and fire it downhill short right of the bunkers. The green is well above you, so take more club than normal and favour the left side. Missing right leaves you very little chance of making par.

A birdie chance, but danger lurks by the green as a lake edges in tightly up the left. Those firing from long range might also fall foul of the remains of the centuries old aquaduct that runs close to the right side of the wickeldy tilting green. Might be best to go for an easy three shotter.

Don't be fooled by the fantastic view, it’s a tough hole into the prevailing wind where nothing but a good strike will do if you are to hit and hold the green. Beware of the front of the green though, because any ball pitching on the first quarter can die and trickle back towards the water.

The most demanding par 4 on the course, with a spetacular tee shot way down onto fairway dotted with bunkers. It then swings right and up to a green perched above deep dip and another trap. Play at least 2 clubs more than the distance suggests.

A nervy drive as trees on both sides make it look tighter that it is. If you strike it well you can get extra roll down a steep slope wich puts the green in range for longer hitters. A safe way is to fire up the left so you can play up the length of the green.

THE MONASTERY COURSE

The Monastery course, launched in 1995, also designed by Robert Trent Jones Jr., is the perfect complement to its sister course. The 9-hole course is less undulated than the Atlantic Championship, offering moderated challenges which suit all levels of players. The Monastery golf course is also characterized by fast greens and narrow fairways and benefits from the stunning landscapes of the surrounding National Park.

Stunning views to the Monastery and Penha Longa Rock, this elevated tee will allow you to see all of the traps of this par 3. Lake on the left, bunker to the right.

Small but enchanting par 3 on the side of “Lagoa Verde“ (Green Lake), black swans, ducks and geese will observe your shot. But don’t forget the water.

Wait a minute and observe the magnificent historic view. The exit should be slightly to the right, but watch out for bunkers. The green is also protected.
